Competition Program

The Competition Program is designed for dancers who want to grow, stay challenged, and train at a more intensive, team-driven level. Dancers will build strong technique, gain performance experience, and learn how to work as a team in a supportive, high-expectation environment.

The program includes regional and national competitions, training opportunities with industry professionals, and ways to stay connected to our community. It’s a full-season commitment (August through May/June), and dancers step into a higher level of commitment, training, and accountability. Dancers can expect to spend a minimum of 4 hours per week in the studio, with some training up to 12 hours per week. Consistent attendance and effort are essential to both individual and team success.Consistent attendance and effort are essential to both individual and team success.

Our placement process is designed to place dancers in groups that best support their growth, development, and success—both technically and as performers.

  • NOTE: The information below is a summary.
Full requirement information can be found here.

    Age & Experience:
The competition program is open to dancers in K-12th grade with at least one year of dance experience.
Dancers new to the Competition Program require director approval for placement. This includes a conversation with the dancer and parents to assess background, goals, and readiness. In some cases, additional time in our Community Program may be recommended to support continued growth. All interested dancers should still complete the interest form and all requirements as listed below.

    Class Recommendation:
We strongly encourage each dancer to spend at least one dance season taking classes in Ballet, Clogging, and Jazz at KADC.

    Summer Session Requirement:
Participating in our summer session classes is essential for dancers seeking team placement for the upcoming season. These sessions help assess growth, technique level, and commitment to skill improvement, key factors in team placement decisions. A minimum of 8 hours of summer technique classes (not private lessons) are required.

  • Team placement is based on a combination of age, technical ability, performance quality, work ethic, coachability, and overall commitment to the team.

All dancers—new and returning—must complete the placement interest form to be considered for a competition team.

Dancers will participate in placement with their age division, and final team placements will be thoughtfully determined by our staff. While age is a starting point, placements ultimately reflect what will best support each dancer’s growth, confidence, and overall experience, as well as strong team dynamics.

    Age Divisions:
    Elementary (K–3rd)
    Intermediate (4th–6th)
    Junior (7th–9th)
    Senior (10th–12th)

  • If you’re interested in being considered for our Competition Program, start by reviewing the Placement Policy & Schedule.

Then, complete the Competition Program Interest Form to be included in placements.

A mandatory Parent Information Meeting will be held prior to placement day, where we will walk through the full season details, including contracts, deposits and fees, schedule, and expectations. At least one parent/guardian must attend.

Dancers are expected to attend scheduled Choreography & Prep sessions and Placement time. If a conflict arises, you may submit a Placement Conflict Request Form in advance. While we do our best to accommodate conflicts when possible, submission of a request does not guarantee a scheduling change or placement.

  • Competition dancers attend classes 2-4 nights per week depending on chosen styles. Ballet and Strength and Stretch (conditioning) are required for all competition dancers.

We expect to compete in up to 3 regional competitions in spring, and one nationals over the summer.

  • We use a dress code to promote unity, confidence and limit distraction to our dancers. It is also for the dancer’s safety and helps our Instructors to give your student the best instruction possible. Instructors must be able to see the dancer’s body outline clearly to prevent injuries, prevent incorrect habits, and make proper corrections on posture and alignment.

For your convenience, all required dance wear for classes is available in our online store. Students at KADC are free to choose from any combination of the options listed for their class grouping, paired with the appropriate shoes for each dance style.

Note: Clogging shoes are ordered separately.
